Hot Weather Tips from the ASPCA

We all love spending the long, sunny days of summer outdoors with our furry companions, but being overeager in hot weather can spell danger, warn ASPCA experts.

"Even the healthiest pets can suffer from dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn if overexposed to the heat," says Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President of Veterinary Outreach, "and heat stroke can be fatal if not treated promptly."
Take these simple precautions, provided by ASPCA experts, to help prevent your pet from overheating. And if you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke, get help from your veterinarian immediately.

Visit the Vet
A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up is a must. Make sure your pets get tested forheartworm if they aren't on year-round preventive medication. Do parasites bug your animal companions? Ask your doctor to recommend a safe flea and tick control program.

Made in the Shade
Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it's hot outdoors. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful to notover-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it's extremely hot.

Know the Warning Signs
According to Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President of Veterinary Outreach, "symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. They can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees." Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

No Parking!
Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. "On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time-even with the windows open-which could lead to fatal heat stroke," says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. Also, leaving pets unattended in cars in extreme weather is illegal in several states.

Make a Safe Splash
Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool-not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause stomach upset.

Screen Test
"During warmer months, the ASPCA sees an increase in injured animals as a result of High-Rise Syndrome, which occurs when pets-mostly cats-fall out of windows or doors and are seriously or fatally injured," says Dr. Murray. "Pet owners need to know that this is completely preventable if they take simple precautions." Keep all unscreened windows or doors in your home closed and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured.

Summer Style
Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a one-inch length, never to the skin, so your dog still has some protection from the sun. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. As far as skin care, be sure that any sunscreen or insect repellent product you use on your pets is labeled specifically for use on animals.

Street Smarts
When the temperature is very high, don't let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close the ground, your pooch's body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum.

Avoid Chemicals
Commonly used flea and tick products, rodenticides (mouse and rat baits), and lawn and garden insecticides can be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep them out of reach. When walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals. Keep citronella candles, oil products and insect coils out of pets' reach as well. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect your animal has ingested a poisonous substance.

Party Animals
Taking Fido to a backyard barbeque or party? Remember that the food and drink offered to guests may be poisonous to pets. "Keep alcoholic beverages away from pets, as they can cause intoxication, depression and comas," says Dr. Steven Hansen, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Animal Health Services. "Similarly, remember that the snacks enjoyed by your human friends should not be a treat for your pet; any change of diet, even for one meal, may give your dog or cat severe digestive ailments. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with the sweetener xylitol."

Fireworks Aren't Very Pet-riotic
Please leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations, and never use fireworks around pets. "Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns or trauma to curious pets, and even unused fireworks can be hazardous," says Dr. Hansen. "Many types of fireworks contain potentially toxic substances such as potassium nitrate, copper, chlorates, arsenic and other heavy metals."

The primary job responsibilities include ensuring the safety and well being of both daycare and boarding dogs in the playgroups, keeping the facility and playrooms clean and providing exceptional customer service to all clients.

The major challenge of this position is maintaining peace and calm in the playgroups during challenging times such as morning drop off and afternoon pick up and also knowing the dog body language cues that indicate the need to step in and doing so in a timely manner to prevent escalation of behaviors.

This job is very physical and includes lots of cleaning. The qualified individual will be responsible, reliable and trustworthy. Good customer skills a must. Shifts are 7am -- 12:30pm and 1:30pm - 7:00pm Monday through Friday as well as rotating weekends and some holidays. Dear Ma or Paw,

I am writing to tell you about a very cool event that The Good Dog Spot just signed up for called the American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life. With every step they take and every wag of the dogs’ tails at this dog walk event, they will be raising funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

I hope that we can join my friends and caretakers from the Good Dog Spot at Bark For Life! We can register on their Team Web Page. We can walk with them — all of whom are passionate about the fight against cancer (just like they’re passionate about caring for us good dogs when we visit)! If we can’t attend the event, we can still help my friends at The Good Dog Spot make a difference with an online donation on their Team Web Page.

Cancer takes both our four-legged and two-legged friends away from us far too soon. Whether we walk at the event or make a donation, we can take pride in knowing that we are helping the American Cancer Society find cures and better ways of detecting the disease early, when it's most treatable.

Champ enjoys playing with all types of dogs, but he has a particular fondness for German Shepherds. His best friend is Harley, a 1 yr old black German Shepherd that belongs to one of the staff members. They play all day and even nap next to each other!
When Champ first came to daycare, he was very scared to walk on our floors. For such a big dog, he sure is a marshmallow! He has gained tons of confidence and now strides proudly in and out of daycare.

Hello everybody!

Hello everybody! This is Phoebe, one of the daycare kids! I've been going to daycare at the Good Dog Spot with my mommy since February and boy oh boy, I've been having the time of my doggy life! I made made so many fluffy friends, I can't even count them all on one paw! Then the good people there moved to an even bigger Good Dog Spot and I got so happy I nearly started chasing my tail 'til I got dizzy. It's so much bigger to play and cause mischief! We also make crafts too, can you believe it? For Mother's and Father's day, my buddies made mugs with their paw prints on them as gifts for their parents! (It's like I say, if you get Mom or Dad in a good mood, you get more treats!) Oh gosh! Playtime is about to start! See ya later!

If you haven’t heard yet, we’re moving!! In May, we’ll be moving a mile and a half down the road to a much larger facility to better serve your pet care needs. It was with much deliberation, some sadness and a lot of enthusiasm that we made the decision to relocate The Good Dog Spot. Our new spot will have a lot more play space – both inside and out.

Our new address will be 35 C North Chicopee Street and we'll be in the same building with Exercise Finished Dog Training Center! (They're on the 2nd floor and we'll be on the 1st).

Dogs attending daycare on Election Day - Tuesday, November 4th - will get to "vote" for their candidate by choosing either a Democratic Donkey or Republican Elephant cookie from Taxi's Dog Bakery during snack time. The votes will be tallied by the daycare staff and posted in the office as well as on the website at 2pm!

Exercise Finished is on the second floor. What if my dog
doesn’t do stairs? Where will they go to the bathroom?
No problem! There’s an elevator in the back. Drop your pet
off in the morning and we’ll take care of the rest. If he or she
is hesitant with stairs, we’ll use the elevator. As for bathroom
breaks, we have extra staff on board so there will no problem
scheduling routine trips outside.

Refreshments will be available at pick up – so feel free to join us and look at pictures of all the fun!

Directions

FROM THE MASS PIKE: Exit 5, bear left on the ramp after the toll booth, turn right off of the ramp. Proceed straight through the first set of lights. At the third set of lights, Unique Motors is on the opposite left corner, go straight through the intersection, take the first left into the driveway directly behind Unique Motors. The training center is located in the tall, brick building that is set back off the road.

FROM THE NORTH: I-91 south to Exit 16 (Route 202), turn left off the ramp. Turn right at the fifth set of lights (ball field on right corner), this road turns into I-391. Proceed on I-391 to exit 4-B, turn right off the ramp. See I-391 continued.

FROM THE SOUTH: I-91 north to I-391 to exit 4. Turn left off the ramp. See I-391 continued.

I-391 CONTINUED: Proceed down the hill, following signs for 141 West. Turn right at the bottom of the hill. Proceed straight through the next 3 sets of lights. At the fourth set of lights (next to Sunoco Mini Mart and 1.3 miles from where you exited I-391), turn right and go underneath a railroad trestle. At the next set of light (Unique Motors on left corner), turn left and make an immediate left into the driveway located behind Unique Motors. Follow driveway straight back to the tall brick building with Plymouth Paper sign.

FROM THE GOOD DOG SPOT: Proceed up the James Street hill, to the intersection of James Street and Montcalm Street. Take a right onto Montcalm Street. Montcalm Street becomes Prospect Street. Stay straight to go onto Buckley Boulevard. Travel down the hill and at the base of hill, you’ll see two large brick buildings on your right. You will also see signs for Main Street Candlery and Cote’s Carpet. Take your very last right (right before the chainlink fence and before the intersection and Unique Motors). Proceed down the driveway and turn right. The entrance is the first door on the building.

Daycare Halloween Celebration!
A big party is planned for The Good Dog Spot daycare “kids” on Halloween day – Friday, October 31st. Due to the popularity of the Halloween event, it is limited to existing daycare "kids". We’ll be bobbing for hotdogs and having a costume contest! All dogs attending daycare are encouraged to bring their Halloween costumes. Our neighbors will be stopping by for some “reverse trick-or-treat” – that is, they’ll visit us and give treats to the dogs. They’ll also be voting for their favorite costume. Don’t have a costume? Don’t worry – we’ve got a few extra, just in case! Please note that we are not responsible for damaged costumes!

October class offerings at The Good Dog Spot:

Good Dog Basics - A 4 week program focused on helping owners teach their dogs basic skills to improve the dog's behavior at home and out in public. Behaviors that will be addressed in class include; teaching your dog the proper behavior for greeting people, moving out of the way when asked, staying in place, coming when called and other useful commands. Please bring a hungry dog and lots of small easy to chew and swallow treats with you to class.

Dogs Just Wanna Have Fun!
Pre-requisite: All dogs will be required to have completed a basic obedience or puppy obedience class.
This class will reinforce learned skills such as walking on a leash, sit, down, stay, come - in a relaxed, fun format; sometimes utilizing games and basic trick training to enhance dog/owner communication skills. Instructor led class discussions on canine current events; opportunity to discuss training or behaviour issues and participate in brainstorming and solving simple issues which encourages all handlers to become more thinking, compassionate owners.

Doggie Manners 101 How are your dog's manners? This 6-week class covers basic commands including sit, come when called, and stay among others. Skills covered include polite greetings, no begging, no jumping and more. This class is full of helpful information and participating in it will help you build a better relationship with your dog. Cost is $125.

Doggie Manners 102 Now that your dog has some manners.... what's the next step? Manners 102 is designed to take your dog's skills to the next level! This 6-week class covers advanced commands including hand signals for sit, come when called, and stay. Skills covered include going to "place", settle, return to owner’s side, preparation for off leash, and other advanced skills & commands. Prerequisite: Doggie Manners 101 or permission from the class instructor. Cost is $125.

Off Leash Extravaganza This class is ideal for the handler and dog that want to live their lives free of leashes. We cover off leash walking; come when called and 15-foot stay in both a down and a sit position - just to name a few. This class meets for 10 weeks (First class NO DOGS, please). Pre-requisite: Doggie Manners 102 or permission from the class instructor. Cost is $190.

Flea & Tick Season Is Quickly Approaching!
All cats and dogs are susceptible to flea infestations, except for some that live in high elevations or in extremely dry environments. You can help your pet win the war on fleas by knowing your flea season, which is largely influenced by temperature and humidity. This graph factors past weather data to illustrate when fleas are most likely to be active in this area – between April and November.

The best defense is a strong offense! Consider a flea and tick preventative for your pet! The once-a-month applications work very well – provided you remember to use them on a regular basis. You can find Advantage, Advantix, Frontline and Frontline Plus at The Good Dog Spot, beginning in April. If we don’t have the right size in stock, we will gladly order it for you! Save 10% if you pre-order your flea & tick preventative before March 31st!

As a side note, garlic is known to be an all natural flea repellent – when your dog eats garlic, the smell is excreted through the dog’s skin making your dog less likely to be the flea’s next meal (garlic may not be your favorite cologne and it’s not the flea’s favorite smell either). Brewer’s yeast tablets will also help to make your dog less attractive to fleas because, as with garlic, the smell is excreted through the skin.

If your pet does get fleas, we can help! It is important to remember to treat your home as well as your pet if fleas are found. If you bring your clean, flea free pet home to a flea infested house, well, you get the picture! We can work with you to schedule an appointment for a flea bath while you treat your house. We carry flea bombs which can be purchased individually or as a package deal with a flea bath. Just ask Lisa for more details!

Please Clean Up After Your Pet!

For your convenience, there is now a Mutt Mitt dispenser mounted to the left of the entrance to The Good Dog Spot. We have had several complaints from our landlord and his employees regarding dog poop near their equipment and in the parking lot. Mutt Mitts are 2 ply bags with puncture resistant bottoms that will degrade in composts and landfills. We are happy to dispose of used bags – just bring them in for us. We ask for everyone’s cooperation in keeping the area neat and clean and we appreciate everyone’s assistance in advance.

Daycare News

There’s a lot to celebrate in the next couple of months!

Our annual Easter Bone Hunt for daycare dogs will be held on Friday, March 21st. Since food aggression can cause issues in group settings, each dog “hunts” for his or her hidden bones on their own (with a human “helper”) in the small dog play area or outside (weather permitting). Advanced registration for daycare on that Friday is strongly encouraged to ensure enough Easter Bones for each dog and enough time for each dog to “hunt”.
PLEASE NOTE: This event is only for dogs attending daycare and your pet’s “hunting” time cannot be predetermined.

Spring is right around the corner and so is baseball season!! We will be holding our 2nd Annual Red Sox Home Opener celebration for dogs attending daycare on Tuesday, April 8th. The event will include baseball games for the dogs, hot dogs during Snack Time and homemade baseball cookies to take home. This year’s home opener against Detroit will be on the radio for all to enjoy at its 2:05 start time! Be sure to sign your daycare “kid” up for this fun-filled event in advance so we’re sure to have enough cookies and hot dogs to go around.

February brings yet another busy month at The Good Dog Spot! We are anxiously awaiting the renovations to our facility that will double the size of the daycare play areas and increase the amount of space available for training classes and workshops!

Throughout the your dog's training stay, he or she is trained a minimum of 2-3 times per day at a minimum of 20 minutes per session. Training begins in an indoor environment without any distractions and gradually becomes more advanced, leading to outdoor exercises with a variety real-life distractions, children, squirrels, other dogs, etc.

Dogs spend their free-time playing and socializing with the members the dog daycare "pack". This allows your dog to interact with a variety of dogs (dog chosen for their exceptional temperaments) and improve his or her social skills during the training program.

Last but not least, Valentine’s Day will be here soon! We will be hosting a Valentine’s Day party for our Daycare dogs on Thursday, February 14th. The party will include Craft Projects, Homemade Valentine Goodies and a complimentary nail trim.

Preparations for our Valentine’s Day craft projects will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6th and Thursday, Feb. 7th. If you would like for your dog to participate in arts & crafts and have a special present to bring home on Valentine’s Day, then he or she must be here on one of those 2 days. Projects will be available for pickup on or after Feb. 14th.

Please feel free to bring in Valentine’s Day “treats” for your dog to share with his or her friends! For ideas or suggestions, just ask!

Saturday Training Classes Starting Soon!

DOGGIE MANNERS 101 starts Saturday, February 16th!

How are your dog's manners? This 6-week class will meet from 10 to 11 am and covers basic commands including sit, come when called, and stay among others. This class is full of helpful information and participating in it will help build a better relationship with your dog. Cost is $125.

TRICK TRAINING starts Saturday, February 23rd! Have some fun with your dog! This 4 week class meets from 11 - 12 and will be filled fun and games. A variety of tricks will be covered. Dogs do not need to have any training experience however all dogs must be good with other dogs. Tricks include roll over, play dead and put your toys away. Class is limited to 8 dogs. Cost is $90 plus $15 for supplies.

Our Trainer has more than 25 years of experience in training and educating dogs and their humans. The mission is to share her extensive knowledge of canine behavior, obedience training, trick training, therapy dog training, show training, and behavior modification in order to build strong canine and human partnerships built on trust, love, and respect – relationships that last a lifetime.

We'll be accepting contributions through to December 31st and our wonderful friends at the East Springfield Veterinary Clinic have agreed to match our fund drive which will provide twice the funds for veterinary care for animals in need.

What’s new at The Good Dog Spot…as always, there’s a lot going on here! Our daycare “kids” have been busy making colorful “pawprint-leaf trees” during daycare. They were hung for display throughout the reception area of our shop and then sent home for Moms and Dads.

“Santa Paws” will be visiting The Good Dog Spot on Saturday, December 1st – this is an event for pets and their people and is open to both daycare and grooming customers as well as the general public. Read through the newsletter for more updates about our holiday festivities.

Holiday Sleepovers are still available for dogs who attend daycare at least twice in the four weeks prior to their overnight stays. This means that they’re not necessarily daycare dogs (they could be grooming or training customers, too) but they have passed the daycare evaluation and they have spent some time with us and our group in order to learn the basic routine. We look forward to sharing the holidays with our “regulars” and ask that if you’re in need of lodging for your pet this holiday season, you act quickly, as space is limited and filling up fast.

No Scaredy Cats this Halloween: Top 10 Safety Tips for Pet Parents

Attention, companion animal caretakers! The ASPCA would like to call your attention to these common-sense precautions that’ll help keep your pets safe and stress-free this time of year.

1. No tricks, no treats: That bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous for dogs and cats, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. If you suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

2. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, yet they can produce gastrointestinal upset should pets ingest them. Intestinal blockage could even occur if large pieces are ingested.

3. Keep wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet could experience damage to his mouth from shards of glass or plastic, or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock.

4. A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise extreme caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.

5. Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume can cause undue stress.

6. If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe or bark. Keep a look out for small, dangling, or easily chewed-off pieces on the costume that your pet could choke on.

7. Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not obstruct her vision in any way. Even the sweetest animals can get snappy when they can't see.

8. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room during peak trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

9. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside.

10. IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and become lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip increase the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

Q. Is Flea and Tick prevention necessary all year?

A. Absolutely! Flea and tick preventative should be used all year. With the abnormally warm weather this fall, there is more wildlife activity and a greater chance of your pet coming in contact with both fleas and ticks while outside. Also, as cooler weather sets in, fleas tend to seek shelter and look for warmer places. The colder weather does inhibit their breeding, but does not stop it.

The best way to avoid a flea infestation is to use year round flea and tick preventative. There are several brands but the most well known are Frontline and Advantage/Advantix. Careful attention must be given to directions and label warnings especially in households with small children or other animals.

If your pet does get fleas, it is important to treat your home as well as the animal so the infestation does not reoccur. Think about it – if you put your clean, flea-free pet back into a flea infested area – what’s to stop the fleas from hopping right back on? Frequent vacuuming and keeping your pets’ bedding clean can help but the best way to rid your house of fleas is with flea bombs. We recommend bombing your house while your pet is with us, receiving his/her flea bath. You may also want to consider using an outdoor spray to kill fleas and other insects in your yard.

Holiday Shelter Drive

This holiday season, The Good Dog Spot would like to do something to help the dogs and cats less fortunate than ours.

You can help by adding a dollar (or more) to your grooming or daycare bill each time you visit The Good Dog Spot from November 19th through December 24th!

Our hope is to find a local veterinarian willing to match the amount of money we raise and donate much needed veterinary care to the local shelters.

We will have a Holiday Giving Tree in our reception area, where customers can select an item that they wish to donate (such as dog food, cat food, cleaning supplies and gift cards to Walmart, Target, Staples, etc). We will accept these items until December 24th – at which time we will pack up the items and bring them to the shelters – just in time for Santa Paws to spread some holiday cheer to our friends in need!

Many pet owners try to be careful about how much they feed their pet. They attempt to follow the feeding suggestion on the pet food bag or what has been recommended by their veterinarian. Unfortunately, when measuring the food, the proper measuring device is not always used. A standard measuring cup actually contains 8 ounces. Josh continues to impress all our customers with his enormous size and sweet disposition! People asked, “Is that a bear?” or “Is that a pony?” The answer to both is “No, it’s Josh – our gentle giant!” Little dogs love to climb on him when he’s laying down and medium sized dogs try to use him as a stepstool – to see what’s going on outside our window. The bottom line is that all the daycare dogs love Josh – and we do, too!

Josh is a very observant boy – he’ll frequently bark to let us know when something is new or out of place and he seems to know the exact minute his Mom and Dad come to pick him up! Sometimes he doesn’t want to leave at the end of fun day and waits for Lisa to kiss him good-bye.

Josh was our very first daycare dog and he continues to be our biggest daycare dog. He attends daycare several times a week and also enjoys being pampered in our Grooming ‘Spaw’ on a regular basis.

The Good Dog Spot, Inc. opened its doors officially in January of 2007 – and boy does time fly! With a steady group of repeat customers and a continuous flow of new ones, we’ve had a very successful 7 months and are looking forward to many, many years of caring for all the good dogs (and cats) in Western Massachusetts!

Your Bags Are Packed....But What About His?

Summer is here and with it comes vacation season. Finding a good place for your pet to stay while you’re out of town can be a daunting task. Is it clean? Is it secure? Is the staff knowledgeable? Friendly?

Put your worries aside because Overnight Stays have arrived at The Good Dog Spot!

Starting in August, you will now have the option of leaving your dog at The Good Dog Spot while you’re away on vacation. This is not your ordinary kennel – in fact, there are no kennel runs here! Each overnight guest will play during the day with the other daycare dogs and have his or her own private Dog Den to rest in during nap time and to sleep in at night. In order for your pet to stay over, he or she will have to have passed the Daycare Evaluation and attend daycare at least twice during the four weeks prior to his or her stay. This is to ensure that your pet will play well with the other dogs and will remain familiar with the daily routine as well as the staff who care for them while in daycare.

The Good Dog Spot is owned and operated by Elizabeth Powers and Lisa Peloquin. Both women have years of experience in the pet care industry and are certified in Pet First Aid and CPR through the American Red Cross. Elizabeth is currently the only ABKA Certified Kennel Operator (CKO) in Western Massachusetts and providing peace of mind for the parents of overnight guests is her passion! Lisa’s expertise lies in the grooming and dog behavior areas. Daycare “kids” love her – in fact, sometimes they won’t leave until she has given them one last hug and good bye pat! Lisa is an experienced groomer, an ABKA Advanced Certified Pet Care Technician and is currently studying to join her business partner as the second CKO in Western Mass.

Ask Your Groomer

Q. Can my pet get sunburned?

A. Yes, dogs and cats can get sunburned.

Dogs who have no pigment on their nose can develop 'nasal solar dermatitis’, a condition caused by a hypersensitivity to the sun. Pets (especially cats) with white ears are prone to develop sunburn on the tips and edges of the ears.

Pets with very short or thin hair can also develop sunburn where the skin is exposed. So whether your pet has naturally short hair or you’ve chosen to have him or her sport a nice “summer cut” to keep cool, it is wise to keep him or her out of direct summer sun, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest.

Sunscreens (SPF should be 15 or greater), containing titanium dioxide as the active ingredient should be used to prevent sunburn.

As with humans, animals with skin that has been sunburned are more likely to develop skin cancer, so protection from sunburn is extremely important.

The Good Dog Spot recognizes the importance of proper skin care for pets and now carries a line of sunscreen developed specifically for pets. It comes in a convenient spray bottle for easy and even coverage.

Taz may only be half the size of most of the daycare dogs, but shhhh – don’t tell her! Taz thinks she’s just as big as they are – and that she calls the shots! Taz loves to play tag and tug with her friends and, as you can see from the picture above, she loves swimming in our pool, too! And yes, that is a bikini she’s wearing! Though she’s primarily sweet, affectionate and well behaved, don’t let her fool you. She has earned her name – Taz (after the Tazmanian Devil)!

Taz attends daycare twice a week and her parents utilize the Pet Taxi Services to get her to and from The Good Dog Spot.

The massive pet food recall recently prompted much research and consideration into addressing the issue of selecting a healthy, natural, high-quality pet food. Reiki Classes for Pet Owners!

This 4 week series of Reiki Classes will include hands on people and pets. The instructor will also be offering to attune both pets and people. A copy of Reiki A Torch in Daylight, by Karyn Mitchell will be given to each participant. This book includes information on first attunement, history, knowledge and hand positions to treat oneself and others.

Classes will be held on Monday evenings at The Good Dog Spot from 6 pm – 8 pm, starting August 20th.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.

What happens in a treatment?

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being. Many have reported miraculous results.

How does one learn Reiki?

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

"Trick Training" by Sarah Olmstead

Trick training is one of the most fun things dog and owner to do together once the dog understands basic obedience and will yield from pressure. My dog Charley knows twenty or so tricks and he LOVES them! Before I got Charley, I had no idea about how to teach tricks. There are lots of trick training books out there, but none of them told me the most important part: how to START. I've found three basic types of trick training: cueing, isolating and leading.

Cueing is used when your dog does something often and you want to put a name to the trick. Charley, for example, loved to roll on his back. I wanted to add a command "bang" to it to make him play dead. This is a perfect time to use cueing. Cueing is the easiest type of training in my opinion. All you need to do is get a clicker and some cookies and go sit on your couch! Then every time your dog does the behaviour, you click and give him a treat. Pretty soon, when he sees you with the clicker and cookies, he'll do the trick. That's when you can add a name to it. And, presto, you've got a trick-doing dog!

The next type of training is called Isolating. This is when your dog does a behaviour naturallly but not often enough to cue. For example, Charley (and most dogs) will occasionally "bow" as a stretch, to lay down or to play. When you isolate, you need to know what causes the behaviour (cause and effect) and then you need to find a way to create that behaviour. For me, I asked Charley to lay down backwards - that is, instead of sitting to lay down, I had him bow. I could also have gotten him in a play mode. Timing is key when Isolating - this is where a clicker is vital - because dogs can change their behaviour very quickly and you need to let them know exactly when they've done right. This can be one of the most frustrating types of training, but if you stick it out, it is well worth it!

The final type of trick training is called leading. You would use leading if your dog does not do the behaviour naturally at all. While cueing and isolating create the trick in full, leading breaks the trick into very small, easy steps. To lead a trick, you must combine behaviours. For example, when I taught Charley to do the "army crawl", I combined "lay down" and "come". He had to "come" while still "lying down". This type of training is done in baby steps; first he must move an inch, then a foot, then a yard. Today, he can crawl up to twenty feet across a room. Leading is also done more up-close, which means that the clicker is not usually as important as the treats.

It still takes some practice, but knowing how to teach the trick is the most important part of trick training. Remember that all dogs are individuals and that what is "normal" for one dog is "unnatural" for another. And the most important part of trick training is to HAVE FUN!

Opening Day Follies at Chicopee’s Premier Dog Daycare & Pet “Spaw”

While Red Sox fans across Western Massachusetts watched or listened as the Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 14 to 3 at the season’s home opener, good dogs from the area were having their own kind of baseball fun at The Good Dog Spot, Inc., located at 40 Old James Street in Chicopee.

Daycare dogs at The Good Dog Spot, Inc. participated in baseball games, ate hot dogs and listened to the game during their nap/rest time. Each dog was given a souvenir Red Sox bandana and mini Red Sox helmet filled with Gourmet Herbal Dog Biscuits by Deb Rusenko (in the shape of baseballs) to take home with them. When asked about the day’s festivities, co-owners Elizabeth Powers and Lisa Peloquin just smile. “We love what we do!” says Peloquin, “and we love happy dogs. We wanted to do something fun and stimulating with the dogs and being New England natives, celebrating the Red Sox Home Opener was a no brainer! Our baseball games help reinforce basic commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ at the base and ‘come’ to the next base”

Powers states that the Opening Day Celebration is just one of many planned events for the dogs in their daycare. “We recently held an Easter Bone Hunt where our daycare attendees were allowed to search for hidden homemade Easter Bones. So many people think of their dogs as their children; our goal is operate as much like a child daycare as possible and this is just one way that we’re making that happen.”

Offering dog daycare, professional pet grooming at the “Pet Spaw” as well as training and socialization classes, The Good Dog Spot, Inc. is proving to be the spot to be for good dogs in the Pioneer Valley. The daycare facility consists of two indoor play areas and an outdoor play area, in order to help segregate the dogs according to size and play style. The “Pet Spaw” is outfitted with state-of-the-art grooming equipment including a HydroSurge bathing unit that provides a therapeutic massaging action during the bathing process. Grooming services are available for both dogs and cats and can be scheduled on their own or in conjunction with a daycare session.

Lisa Peloquin is an experienced pet groomer and an Advanced Certified Pet Care Technician (ACPCT). She is currently studying to become a certified pet dog trainer (CPDT). Elizabeth Powers is currently the only Certified Kennel Operator (CKO) in Western Massachusetts and also holds the role of Region 1 Director for ABKA, the national trade association for the pet care industry, of which the facility is a member. Both women are certified in Pet First Aid & CPR through the American Red Cross.
